Lightning cannot be accurately predicted

Lightning is one of the most dangerous natural forces and we are powerless to prevent its occurrence. There are approximately 40 or 50 flashes around the world every second, amounting to 1.4 billion flashes every year. Lightning is responsible for many injuries and fatalities as well as damage to buildings, electrical equipment and power lines. Additionally, lightning causes airlines billions every year in delayed and re-routed flights. Safety, environmental and economical reasons have resulted in the mapping of the world’s lightning activity in an attempt to understand it and protect ourselves from its effects. Continue reading

Are your electronics at risk of damage from surges?

Surge protection is an important preventative step if you want to reduce the risk of valuable electronic devices being damaged by fluctuations in the electric current in your home. The power can fluctuate for a number of reasons, including switching on or off devices that consume a lot of energy or a surge in the current from outside the property because of lightning. Protective measures are a wise investment that will save you money in the long run. Continue reading

Bird spikes are an effective solution

It may seem harmless when a few birds begin to settle on your roof or around other areas of your property, but they will soon bring more birds with them and before you know it you could be completely overrrun. Large numbers of birds can cause structural damage to your building and roofing tiles, block your gutters with their droppings, and create health hazards. Continue reading

Repairing high rise structures damaged in Storm Desmond

Storm Desmond brought a huge amount of rainfall and high winds to parts of the UK at the beginning of December. The extratropical cyclone created an atmospheric river, a corridor of moist air, that brought record breaking amounts of rain to several areas including Honister Pass in Cumbria which experienced 341.4mm of rain in 24 hours on 5th December. The wind reached highs of 83mph in Snowdonia National Park and was over 80mph in the Scottish Highlands. Continue reading

Ensure those commercial gutters are completely unclogged

The most common problem with gutters is clogging, particularly in winter when we see a lot of rain and high winds. Gutters can easily become filled with debris such as twigs, leaves and litter as well as standing water. When gutters are left to fill up, the excess weight eventually becomes too much and the entire guttering system is rendered useless. Without well functioning gutters, the rainwater that lands on your roof will not be directed to the drains located on your property. Instead, it will collect in the gutters where the debris will absorb it. When this is no longer possible, it will run down the sides of the building leading to problems with condensation, mould and damp. Continue reading

Homes becoming more vulnerable to surges

Recent years have seen surge protection become a much more complex and important issue. This is largely due to the fact that the volume and value of electronic equipment found inside households has increased significantly. The various types of electrical appliances we now find in properties are very susceptible to surges as they are often interconnected. We specialise in the supply of systems that protect modern equipment in residential properties and reduce the risk of damage from voltage spikes. Continue reading

Lightning damages more than electrical equipment

Many of us associate the damage caused by lighting with electrical items, so we invest in protective systems to prevent equipment and appliances being damaged by the power surge a strike delivers. While this is certainly important, it is not the only problem which can be caused to a building when it’s struck. There have been many cases where the structure itself has been badly damaged as a consequence of being hit by lightning. Continue reading

Preventing further harm from damaged buildings

There are a number of factors which cause damage to buildings in the UK. While wear and tear from age is the most common, sometimes there are incidents which serve to speed up the cause of this damage and make it worse. The gale force winds and heavy rainfall most of us had to endure throughout October and November are all too familiar examples of such incidents. While it is essential to repair buildings damaged by such weather conditions, it is not always possible to carry repairs out immediately. In such cases, it is crucial to at the least secure the building in a way that prevents anyone coming to harm. When a building is taller than one storey, fitting debris netting is an easy yet effective way of achieving this. Continue reading
