Repairing high rise structures damaged in Storm Desmond

Storm Desmond brought a huge amount of rainfall and high winds to parts of the UK at the beginning of December. The extratropical cyclone created an atmospheric river, a corridor of moist air, that brought record breaking amounts of rain to several areas including Honister Pass in Cumbria which experienced 341.4mm of rain in 24 hours on 5th December. The wind reached highs of 83mph in Snowdonia National Park and was over 80mph in the Scottish Highlands.

The weather caused flooding, landslides and extensive property damage in several areas. The winds were particularly problematic for high rise structures, causing a wide array of damages including snapping aerials and weathervanes, damaging roof materials and the fabric of properties. These structures, whether they are apartment blocks, offices or churches need to be surveyed carefully to determine if there are any damages and whether urgent repairs are needed.

Accessing high rise structures takes skills and experience if the job is to be accomplished safely. Steeplejacks are the most qualified to do surveys and conduct any repairs. They should be called on to provide these kinds of services to ensure that the work is done properly with minimal risks.
