Sticking to animal welfare guidelines

In 2015 PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wrote to North Devon Council to offer advice about how they could tackle problems with aggressive seagulls in the area. The organisation identified a number of prospective solutions for the problem by working closely with their international affiliates. In the letter they suggest several things that can be done to manage the birds in a humane manner using techniques that would not require killing them or destroying their eggs.

One thing PETA suggests is the use of Flock Off paint and similar products. The paint is designed to reflect UV light and appears brighter depending on the level of exposure to sunlight. It can act as an effective deterrent to birds by making surfaces look like they are unsafe to land on. The paint can be used alongside other bird proofing products to create a complete management plan.

PETA also advised people to use anti-roosting products to prevent birds from creating nests on buildings and other structures. These come in many varieties to suit all kinds of requirements, ranging from nets to slides and coils. Many of them will offer long term, low maintenance solutions to the problem.

The advice also extended to site management to help make sites less attractive to birds. There are several steps you can take in this regard including minimising standing water, trimming trees and vegetation regularly, storing rubbish securely, and ensuring people don’t feed the birds. Cutting off any potential food supply is a very effective deterrent and can be achieved through proper waste management.
