The changing nature of the steeplejack profession

The term steeplejack refers to a person who climbs and works on a tall structure. Over the years, the profession has changed and evolved greatly. Historically it used to mean one which specifically had a spire at the top, but this is now seldom the case. While church towers and chimneys certainly fit into this category, we are required to climb and work on all forms of tall buildings. Nowadays, we are likely to be found working on blocks of offices and flats, industrial cooling towers, road or rail bridges, and many other types of tall structures.

Just as our likely places of work have changed over the years, so too has the nature of what we do. While once steeplejacks would be called on for maintenance and repairs, it is now a profession which demands a high level of diverse skills. Although we do indeed maintain and repair buildings, we also install bird proofing systems and lighting protection to help prevent different types of damage to buildings, perform SkyVac gutter cleaning, and offer a wide range of other domestic and industrial services.

Through all of the changes that have taken place in the profession over the years, we have always had at least one constant – our membership of the Steeplejack and Lightning Protection Training Group. For over 40 years this organization has ensured that members in the industry maintain a high level of safety and quality standards in all the work they do. Our membership gives the assurance that we are qualified to complete our work in the safest, most effective way possible.

While once the idea of a steeplejack was a handyman capable of climbing a tower to fix a few loose bricks or tiles, now the term refers to a highly trained team capable of carrying out a wide range of services at height. We look forward to using our steeplejack skills to benefit your property too.
